Considering Long Term Care? The Most Important Thing You Need To Know
No matter where you decide to live, and no matter how you come to find it, the most important thing to remember is, this is your home.
You are paying to live in this setting just as you would have paid a mortgage or rent. But, in addition to paying for housing, you are paying for care. You are entitled to the care that you need and deserve.
The staff at the facility you live in are not doing you a favor by responding to your call light, taking you to an activity, giving you food that tastes good, or helping you get dressed. They are providing you with a service that you are paying them money for.
You or your authorized representative need to be actively involved in your care planning, should be advocating for what you need and want, and should be following up with the facility assure that what is in writing actually occurs.
Admittedly, this can be easier said than done. Not everyone has the ability or desire to do this for themselves and not everyone has a friend or family member to do this for them. However, everyone does have access to a Long-Term Care Ombudsman. This is the state agency dedicated to advocating for individuals in Long Term Care. If you have a concern that you need assistance resolving, whether you're a resident of long-term care, a family member or an interested party, call 800-522-2602.
