Let's Make A Personal Property Plan: The Final Step
You've come a long way! You've assured that treasured family items have found new homes where they will be valued and cared for. You've assured that you will have everything you need in your new home. You've identified what you wish to sell and what you wish to donate and have begun doing so. And yet, there may still be items in your home that are unaddressed. Let's face it, we need to ask....
Q5. What needs to go in the garbage??
As much as we hate to admit it, there will be a certain amount of stuff that simply doesn't have resale, sentimental, or even donatable value in the traditional sense. That said, it doesn't mean it all goes directly in the trash recepticle.
Prescription medications should be taken to the closest safe disposal site. This could be a pharmacy, police department, or other local agency.
Hazardous items such as half used paint containers, garden fertilizers, and others need to go to your locally designated site. Where you live will determine your resources for disposing of these items.
Consider which remaining items may be able to be recycled or have other second life potential. Even your stained or torn bedding or bath linens can go to animal shelters, the American Textile Recycling Service and TerraCycle.
Hopefully you've reached the point in the personal property downsizing process that you are feeling a weight lifted off your shoulders and are confident you'll be moving to your new home with what you need, and what you want, and nothing you don't!
